Houston Skyline

The Houston Skyline

Houston Skyline: The goal of this assignment is to communicate two different points of view

about the same subject matter, in this case the City of Houston.

I would like it to be shot during the "magic" time of day at dusk or dawn, where buildings are still clearly defined and you can see the lights inside the buildings. If you time it right the sky will still have detail and perhaps the photo will take on a golden glow. Please see the examples on the Examples Skyline & Photo Essay page on this site. (see nav bar at top)

First: Make a photo of Houston as a bright, gleaming city of the future, the Chamber of Commerce

view of the city.

Second: Make a photo of Houston that shows it as a city that is dirty, trashy and poverty stricken,

the anti-Chamber of Commerce view of the city.

Present the two photos on the same page and turn in as we have with previous assignments.

Suggested Locations for GOOD skyline photos:

Quitman Street overpass on I45 North (exit for Quitman is only on the inbound side of I-45)

(The photo below was taken from the Quitman Street overpass)

Allen Parkway-Eleanor Tinsley park or Sabine Street Bridge.

George Bush Statue downtown on Washington near the Post Office.

South Loop bridge over the Houston Ship Channel.

Sam Houston Park downtown.

Suggest Locations for BAD skyline photos:

West Dallas street near downtown with cemetery in foreground.

East side of downtown (UH side) along Dowling Street.

Top of Robertson Stadium seats has a nice view of Downtown as does the top of the

Moody towers on the UH campus.

Please DO NOT stop on any freeways and get out of your car for photos.

Houston Skyline-The idea here is to make two photographs with

opposing or contrasting messages.

Example of a  “Houston is Awful” skyline photo where you get something

in the foreground such as a junk yard, homeless encampment, run down buildings,

a cemetery or something similar that shows Houston in a bad light.
